Camping = life skills.

“Camping? Again? I don’t want to go.” When I heard that we’re going backpacking, that’s what I thought. However, when I got back, my mind had completely changed. Going camping and getting knowledge about nature is better than studying with books alone. While I was away from the complicated city, I learned how to work and manage my horse. Also, I learned I have to put someone else’s need before my own. Lastly, I found out that I can get to know more about teachers and friends.  For these reasons, I disagree with the decision to cancel future OVS backpacking trip.
On this trip, I got a working knowledge about my horse. For instance, while we were getting ready for a trail ride, my horse was being naughty. So, my teacher advised me to put a halter on after I groomed my horse and got all equipment that is required for riding. Now, I know what to do when my horse is being naughty. Later, we had a chance to go a equine care center. When we got there, everyone was fascinated included myself. After touring the hospital, I thought about becoming a horse doctor. If I were in small tiny classroom, I would never have this experience. This was my first taste of learning skills from camping.
Secondly, I learned that I have to take of someone else before I take care of my self. For example, I had to get up early in the morning to feed my horse before I got to eat. Not just breakfast, for every meal, I had to feed my horse or give them water before I ate. In reality, when I grow up and have my child, I will have to take care of them first before I think about me. I learned that we have to consider other peoples’ needs. Also, we can’t learn this experience in classroom.
Lastly, I had a chance to know more about my classmates. Because we worked together, we could finish our difficult work completely. Teamwork is really important on trail rides. While we were riding horses on trail, every horse was really nervous and naughty. So, we had to be ware of other people and their horses to not make someone hurt. After that, we worked together easier and did difficult work. Through this camping, I know more about my classmates than before because I spent lots of times with friends.  I also made some new friends too. In reality, friendship is really important in society and camping can help people to develop friendships.
In conclusion, I think experiences make us learn better.  Through this special camping, I learned how to manage and take care of our horses and about our classmates. Camping also allows me to know that we have to consider and think about other people. It will also make students brave and brilliant in many ways. Therefore, if OVS eliminates this valuable chance to learn, students will never know about important skills necessary for the future.

Poetry....? Not my friend.

One week ago, in my writing class, we learned about poetry. At first, I thought the poetry class was going to be boring, however; I figured out that writing poetry is really fun, and it’s just another type of writing.

At first, we learned about basic vocabulary about poetry. For instance, what is poetry, stanza, rhythm, rhyme, rhyme scheme, meter.. etc. Then, we wrote a free verse poem. It was my first English poem, but I liked it. The next day, I learned about Diamantes. It looks like a diamond and it’s made up of nouns and objects. Here’s my first diamante poem.

Brother

Sweet cute

Playing sleeping eating

Boy, Student Soccer player Korean.

Shopping laughing sleeping

Friendly funny

Sister

Then, we learned about Cinquains. There are really similar to Diamantes, but they have some syllables. Lastly, we learned about Haikus. We wrote a poem by using syllables. It was hard to make syllables, but it was a really fun experience.

I hope that I can learn more about poetry next time. This class made me more interested in poetry and I really enjoyed it.

My Special Class Hike!

Have you ever hiked with your friends? Have you ever hiked 12 miles? January 27, 2012, was a day I will never forget. I went to class hike with whole 8th grade class from OVS! We took off at
Gridley Road
then we started to walk. This was only my second hike in my entire life. I loved it and I hated it.
Early in the morning, our class met at the 8th Grade Lawn. We checked our supplies really quick and got onto the bus. The classes were excited about hiking, but I wasn’t. Honestly, I really didn’t want to go, because I had a cold; however, I had to go. When we arrived, I became nervous. Until that time, I couldn’t even imagine that I was going to walk twelve miles! Soon I became dizzy; it was hard to breathe and my legs hurt. Mr. Inman, the science teacher at our school, helped me to reach the top of the mountain. I felt really sorry for him because I know that it’s hard to push and wait for slow people. While I was walking, I thought. “I will never hike again! But when we arrived at the top of the mountain, my thoughts started to change.
It was lunch time when I got to the top of the mountain, and I thought; I survived! I was the last person in our class. While I eating lunch, I saw a marvelous view. It was just like a picture. There was the ocean, some big mountains and Santa Cruz Island. I felt like I was standing on the clouds and the aura was beautiful too. After that, we ate sandwiches for lunch, and they were delicious than anything I’ve never had. We took pictures and started down. While we were going down, I felt the hot air like a summer wind. It sounded like the winds were saying to me Good Job. I got my first blisters ever on my feet, but I was so happy when I got on the bus. When we got back to school, there was a little surprise for us. There were sodas! A soda after the long, painful hike made me feel heaven.
My second hike, although was painful, it was gorgeous, and I learned many things about hiking. Now, I know that there’s a way to drink the water, and don’t stop makes hike easier. I’m really thankful for Mr. Inman who helped me reach the top of the mountain. When I got back to the dorm, I couldn’t move or feel my legs. I went to hike because it’s duty; however, it gave me unforgettable experience in 2012.

My Best Christmas Holiday.

Do you love holidays? I like many holidays. In Korea, there are many holidays which are Sulnal, Chuseok, thanksgiving, Christmas and so on. We had Christmas holiday as usual and I wasn’t excited about it because we didn’t do special things in Christmas. But, this holiday was different. It was amazing holiday. I went to ski, shopping with my family and I made cookies.
First of all, I went to ski during Christmas break. I was really excited because whole family went ski with me. When we arrived there, my brother and I started to plan for perfect time in ski resort. We went to slope and all the things were white. We went to highest slope and started to run. It was hard and made me tired, but when I back to our room, meats were waiting for me. It was so delicious so I didn’t even talk. Next day, I went to sledge with my little brothers. Our ears and noses were red like Rudolph. When we left ski resort, I was sad but I had nice time with my family.
Next, I went to shopping too. I went many shopping in Christmas break with my friends, family, and my cousin sister. Shopping with my cousin sister was really fun and different because she is only 21 years old and it was first time that I went shopping with her. First, we went to cat café, and it was first time too. We played with little tiny cats and eat cookies. I learn many things about cats during in cat café. Secondly, we went to shopping. She bought me a ring for present. There was a clover in the ring. Lastly, we went to pasta restaurant for dinner and I loved it. I ordered tomato pasta and it was so good. When I go back to my house, I thought that I want to spend my time with my cousin sister again.
Finally, during second weekend, I went to my cousin sister’s house again. Then, we planed to make cookies for Christmas. I was really excited because I’ve never made cookies before. We found recipe for cookies and started to cooking. We tried  to make Christmas tree, ginger man, snowman and so on. We started to bake cookies but it was so weird because we didn’t have shaped cutting and right oven to use. We tried again but failed again and I was sad; however, we had fun during baking cookies. We promised that make perfect cookies next Christmas break.
I made many experience and it was really fun. I hope that next Christmas break com early and had funny times with my family. Christmas break in 2011 was the best holiday I ever had.

My Best Holiday “Sol-Nal”

There are many Holidays in Korea. However, for me, the most important and big Holiday is New Year Day. It’s called “Sol-Nal” in Korean. On this day, I make a goal for one year, meet the whole family and make traditional food.
First of all, I make a list about my goal with my whole family. Sometimes, we make a post and put it in living room. For example, Last week my father said “I will stop smoking.” And my mom said ”I will success in diet!”. The end of the year, I asked them. “did you reach your goal?” and they made it. I will success my goal this year like my mom and dad.
Secondly, I can meet whole family. Actually, I don’t have many chances to meet whole family except big Holiday. So I always wait New Year Day. Also, if I meet family I can go spa and karaoke. Usually, I can’t go spa and karaoke because my mom doesn’t like it. I’m still waiting my family.

In addition, we make traditional food which is rice dumpling soup. It’s called ”Dduck-Guk”. In Korea, if you eat rice dumpling soup, we said we grow 1 year. So, sometimes, children eat a lots to grow fast. I really like it because I love cooking. Also, with my family! I want to try different thing next year.

Now, I’m still waiting for New Years Day. In 2012, January, First, I will make new goal, have fun with my precious family and make different cook and try it. Also, I believe that I will be a nice person than now.
